Providing a UK Government Share Code to prove Right To Work status

Written by Poppy Wooddissee

If you have a passport which is not issued in the United Kingdom (UK) or Ireland, you may be asked to prove your Right To Work status by providing a UK Government Share Code.

Follow these steps to provide your Share Code:

  1. In the email you received from RefNow, click the link to Complete Referee Details.

  2. Select the option to Verify My Identity.

  3. Select the option to Provide a Gov.UK Share Code. You will then be asked to enter a share code and your date of birth into RefNow.

  4. To get a share code, login to the Government Website https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work/get-a-share-code-online (You’ll be able to login to your gov.uk account using the same details as you used for your initial visa application.)

  5. Follow the steps on the website and click ‘Get share code’

  6. Select the purpose of the share code from the listed options.

  7. Continue and confirm all the details are correct, and receive your share code.

  8. Copy your Share Code and Paste it into the box provided on the RefNow system

  9. Enter your Date of Birth into the RefNow system

  10. Click Save to finish

Once your Share Code is provided, your employer can use it to verify your right to work in the UK via the Home Office’s online service.
